Aisling + Mark | Bright, Summer, Lake Engagement Session | Muskego, Wisconsin

Oh where to even start with this engagement session?! A few weeks ago I met Aisling and Mark at their beautiful home in Muskego and just had the best session with them!! Even though it was super hot and humid, these two kept huge smiles on their faces and enjoyed some time with each other :) Then the cherry on top, their amazing dog, Nash, joined us for the session and just made this perfect couple complete!

These two will be tying the knot in the same spot next year and I already cannot wait to hang out with them again and photograph their big day!!

What To Expect From Your Bridal Party Portraits | Shasta Lake, California

Choosing who stands next to you as you say your vows on your wedding day is a very important decision! These are the people that you couldn't imagine getting married without. I June I had the opportunity to photograph this wonderful couple with some of their closest friends at a resort on Shasta Lake in northern California! This group of people exemplifies what bridal parties are all about. Some are family, some are friend, but all are there to love, support, and have the best time ever with the couple!

So what do I do to capture these groups? I always do individual portraits, just the girls, just the guys, and then the whole gang together! Each wedding and group has their own personality and special things they want to do, but just know that this is an example of the basic types of images I will capture for sure at each wedding :)

Tips For A Successful Engagement Session

Tips For A Successful Engagement Session

A lot of my clients ask me before their engagement sessions what advice I have for them, so I thought it was about time that I made a blog post about it!

1. Relax! I know that it's stressful to be in front of a camera, shoot, I get nervous too! Everyone always thinks that they are super awkward in front of the camera and they don't know what to do, however, you have to realize the more relaxed you are the better. I don't think the perfect hand placement is the most important thing in an image, I think your expression and how you're interacting with your partner is most important.

2. Wardrobe is important! You want to look and feel your best for your portrait session and a big part of that is what you're wearing. If you want to feel special, confident, and sexy then you have to wear something other than your normal. Granted, you should wear something comfortable and that you can move in, but how often do you get your portraits taken? Why wouldn't you plan something special to wear for this special occasion?!

3. Coordinate your wardrobe, don't match it! Unfortunately jeans and white t-shirts was a thing in the 90's, but it's no longer the 90's! Couples shouldn't be too matchy-matchy, but your outfits should coordinate. Prints are totally fun, accessories make it unique, and complimentary colors just make it all come together.

4. Don't forget the grooming! I know you are super busy, honestly I understand the chore shaving your legs can be some days, but don't forget the little things! Iron out those wrinkles in clothes, guys don't forget to shave the back of your neck, and drink an extra couple glasses of water so your skin is glowing and fresh.

5. Make the right make-up choice! Have you done your make-up test for the wedding? Your engagement session can be a great time to do that. I know I am not great at my own make-up for fancy events, so it's totally worth it to spend a little money and have it done professionally! Guys, don't forget your foreheads get shiny and lips dry too!

6. Don't be shy! My favorite images to take are the ones when you'll be all cuddled up with each other. I tell my couples to get all cuddly and cozy, a lot! Say absurd things to make each other laugh, run hand-in-hand through a field, have an intimate moment (keep it PG, please ;) ) between the two of you, but just don't be afraid to show your fun, crazy, adventurous, romantic, and intimate sides.

7. Lets get adventurous! If you want something unique that usually means getting off the beaten path and needing a little more of an effort! You can totally wear some more comfy clothes as we hike in and change in to a cute and flowy dress at the final location! Haha, I totally realize that's not for everyone, we can also find a swanky airbnb space to rent for some unique locations.

While a lot of these tips may seem general, or obvious, it's good to just remember the basics. Just know though that the most important and best advice that I can give is to just have fun! Engagement sessions are a special time to spend quality time with your partner, enjoy it!

Ericka + Jared | Downton Chicago Engagement Session | Chicago, Illinois

I had such a fun time exploring Chicago with Ericka and Jared! The session started near their home with their adorable pup, Apollo! Sadly we couldn't take Apollo with us for the rest of the session, but he was the cutest little model with his bowtie and I'm glad I got to meet him :)

From there we took a stroll by the river before Ericka and Jared got all fancy for the perfect view of the Chicago skyline! As you can see these two are just natural in front of the camera and so happy and in love. I cannot wait for their wedding here in Wisconsin later this year!

My Story | A Closer Look Into Who I Am

My Story | A Closer Look Into Who I Am

Hi Everybody! It's me, Jen. Haha as if you couldn't tell by the crazy red hair :) Most of the time I use my blog as a place to showcase more images and give you an better feel for a whole session or wedding, but I decided to switch thing up a bit and share a bit more about me. Something that honestly isn't easy for me to do!

One cold winter day in November, my parents rushed to the hospital with the anticipation of their favorite child being born! Lol, okay I'm really not going that far back and I know my brother probably won't read this so he really won't be offended! All kidding aside, I did grow up in a super small town (like 500 small) in central Wisconsin and I am honestly so grateful for the idyllic little bubble we lived in when I was young. As cliche as it may sound, I really did love photography from a young age, and couldn't wait to get my rolls of 35mm film developed from my very not fancy point-and-shoot cameras. Fast forward past a degree in Accounting and one semester abroad that taught me that life is too short to not be happy, and that's when I made the best decision of my life to go to photography school in Massachusetts!

Did I ever think or imagine when I got to photography school that I would move back to Madison and start my wedding photography business? No way! I started second shooting weddings to make money and just kind of fell in love with being a wedding photographer. So how the heck did the girl that can't travel enough end up back in Madison? Well, I was spending a lot of my free time traveling back to visit, so I figured if I lived here I could travel more! And of course being closer to my family and friends was a perk.

So, here I am, in Madison, Wisconsin building a business as a wedding photographer! I've learned a lot about myself in the last few years and what I want for my life and my business. As much as I struggle with putting more of myself out to the world on social media, I've realized that I want to attract more clients like me! Lol, I mean come on, who doesn't want to hang out with people just like themselves ;) To do this I'm starting with this blog post and describing my ideal client and business which really describes me and who I am!

I love to work with couples that want to create an experience for their friends and family on their wedding day. I want to photograph people that are madly in love and want to celebrate their commitment to each other with all of the people that they love :)  I have worked very hard to get where I am and after spending several years focusing on work, I've decided it's more important to focus on people, relationships, and experiences. Traveling, going on adventures, and being active outside are what I love to do and try to prioritize! This is also something that I tell to all of my clients, that you should prioritize what is important to on your wedding day and really make it your own to reflect you two as a couple and the type of day you want to have. I know that may be a very general description, but I really think it's as easy as that!

Speaking of being easy, you'll should also know that I try to keep things pretty easy, simple, and stress free! You'll notice I've kept my website pretty clean and simple and that's intentional! There are so many complicated things in life, and I don't think photography should be one of those things. I always tell my clients that I am here as a resource for them (seeing as I've photographed 125+ weddings and I don't even know how many portrait sessions) and I always feel so honored that they put their trust in me for these special moments.

To sum it all up, I never thought I would be a wedding photographer! I never thought I would be living in Madison after college. I never thought that I would get to preserve memories for people, but I truly am incredibly grateful that I get to!
